With ears perked and a mischievous expression this red fox makes his way from the shadows of tall golden reeds into the light. The white fur of his muzzle and chest contrasts with the reddish coat of his body, all of his fur was painted using layers of paint to create the fox's thick bushy coat. The small crop of green grass in the foreground was painted with a small dagger brush to add fine details. The light and dark contrast throughout this painting adds to the three dimensional aspects of the artwork. Foxes are social animals and very intelligent with a wide range of habitats including wooded areas, farmland, prairies and yes even in towns and cities. They are not fussy eaters as their diet includes a variety of insects, crayfish, fruits and berries, grasses, birds and small mammals like mice, rabbits, and squirrels. Foxes have the ability to hear low-frequency sounds detecting small animals digging underground in the dirt or under the snow. They are like a cat when stalking prey in getting as close as they can and then pounces and/or chases its prey. The red fox is mostly nocturnal and during the day will sleep in the open and usually wraps its tail around their nose to keep warm. The females will only use a den during breeding season in the spring giving birth to their young. For more information, contact me. info@johannalerwick.com 607-336-6218 |
